Relationships Matter Panel Discussion In our panel discussion, Relationships Matter, we explore how Professional Mentors can help children recover from trauma and thrive, breaking generational cycles of poverty and violence. Click here to watch the full panel. Children experiencing trauma are at risk of "toxic" stress which keeps a child's brain stuck in "fight" or "flight". This can prevent them from learning, building healthy relationships, or developing coping skills. When left unaddressed it can have lifelong negative impacts including chronic diseases, depression, and other mental illnesses. The great news is that trauma is not destiny. The brain has the ability to learn, grow, and change. While therapy and other services are essential, research shows that the presence of a consistent, caring adult is that key to building resilience. A “regulated” relationship – one that allows a child to feel safe, calm, and cared for – provides the foundation on which all other elements of well-being can develop.
